Ovulation Induction

1. What is Ovulation Induction?

Ovulation induction is stimulating the ovaries using a combination of fertility drugs to produce mature follicles. This treatment is suitable for women whose follicles do not mature to release eggs spontaneously.

2. Who needs it?

Women who do not have regular periods may not be releasing eggs regularly (Anovulation) This may occur due to various reasons, for example, over-weight/obesity, polycystic ovaries PCO, excessive exercise, nutritional issues or other health complications.

3. What happens during Ovulation Induction?

During the ovulation induction, tablets/injections are given usually from day 3 to day 7. Frequent ultrasound scans are done to track of the follicles to assess the growth. Once the follicle reaches good size (usually around 17 – 20mm), a trigger injection is given to ripen and release the mature egg. The couple are advised to have sexual intercourse at home 36 hours after the trigger injection.

If the ovulation induction process is successful, the woman ovulates and will be able to conceive a baby. Success rate of Ovulation induction is approximately 5 to 10%. This can vary depending upon the quality of the semen, age of the woman, drugs being used, duration of infertility, etc. Ovulation induction can be tried for up to 6 months, provided there is no other fertility issue.

4. Are there any side-effects?

Women may experience the following symptoms when they are on medications for ovulation induction:

1. Bloating
2. Nausea
3. Hot flushes
4. Weight gain
5. Tenderness in pelvic region
6. Hyperstimulation – A major side-effect of ovulation induction process is Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS), especially in women with PCO. There is also increased possibility of having multiple pregnancies in about 10-12% of women.

5. Are there any alternatives?

Ovulation induction is one of the simplest fertility treatments as it is not only minimally invasive and painless but also low-cost, quicker, and safer as compared to other procedures for infertility in women. However, the success rate is also less compared to other fertility procedures i.e. IUI, IVF, ICSI, which are the alternative fast track treatment options
